The Neighbourhood Mixtape: NXNE 2011 Edition
The Neighbourhood Mixtape is a collection of newly-released songs by Toronto musicians. The mixtape is meant to celebrate Toronto's music culture and provide a forum to listen to and discover new local music.
Every Sunday, I post a five-track mixtape (along with my own mini-reflections for each track) that you can download or stream as a soundtrack for the week.
Track #1: Josh Reichmann, "All Day Wrong"
Josh Reichmann (Tangiers, Bad Tits) experiments with industrial beats and ritualistic arrangements in "All Day Wrong", his vocals unfolding in wavering growls. Catch Reichmann's NXNE showcase on Saturday, June 18th at The Garrison.
Track #2: Evening Hymns, "Lanterns"
"Lanterns" dreams up past-midnight bicycle rides in the city, glowing chalk sketches of hopscotch on the sidewalks, and at the same time, tent stories and sounds from empty woods. Evening Hymns play their NXNE show on Thursday, June 16th at The Music Gallery.
Track #3: Dora Alexander, "Together"
Dora Alexander's "Together" doesn't demand much, but patient ears are rewarded with amiable lyrics, which sprout little by little while brushed percussions and guitars trail in measured rhythms. Dora Alexander plays their NXNE set on Friday, June 17th at Velvet Underground and also the next day (June 18th) at Rancho Relaxo.
Track #4: Little Girls, "Growing"
Little Girls lo-fi lollipop "Growing" fizzes with lulling distortion, a brief ear-candy track that sounds sweeter and sweeter upon repeat. Check out Little Girls' NXNE show on Saturday, June 18th at The Garrison.
Track #5: Fucked Up, "Queen of Hearts"
Fucked Up's rock-opera David Comes to Life arrived on record store shelves this week. And many thanks to Matador Records for giving out freebies like the epic and definitely euphoric "Queen of Hearts", which features the lovely Madeline Follin (Cults) as the voice of David's muse Veronica in the story. Wrongbar hosts Fucked Up's NXNE showcase on Thursday, June 16th.
