Popular Ontario sushi restaurant opening first downtown location this week

A popular sushi restaurant that has Toronto residents travelling outside of city limits to eat there is finally opening a location downtown.

While downtown Toronto has a reputation for being one of Ontario's most vibrant foodie hubs — a reputation that's well earned, of course — the real ones know that Mississauga is, equally, where it's at.

From Ridgeway Plaza, which is rapidly ascending to levels of international notability, to longstanding local stalwarts like La Castile (which is getting a second wind as a celebrity hub with visits from Drake and Kevin Durant as of late), Mississauga is a certified star-maker when it comes to food.

This week, downtown Toronto is getting a new taste of Mississauga's spoils, as Shiroshi Sushi prepares to open its first location within city limits.

Despite only opening two years ago, in the spring of 2024, Shiroshi has made a major name for itself, thanks to its Instagram-approved gems of premium fish, hefty hand rolls and unique offerings, like baby firefly squid and torched salmon tataki.

As of Tuesday, May 26, it's Toronto's turn to taste what all the hype is about, as the restaurant soft-opens a sister location on West Queen West.

Situated between Beaconsfield Avenue and Lisgar Street, the restaurant finds itself in auspicious culinary surroundings, sitting on the same block as Bar Prima, the Drake Hotel and King Slice, not to mention just across the street from competitor Sushi Momo

That also means that competition is steep, though. Will this suburban sushi joint prove to be a small fish in a big pond, or will it manage to make a splash? We'll all just have to eat there to find out.

Shiroshi will be located at 1128 Queen St. W.
