A stylish new seafood spot quietly opened in Toronto earlier this month, and it's got all the trappings of the city's next food fixation.
"Hidden gem"-this, "hidden gem"-that, it's all getting a bit trite in Toronto these days, isn't it? That said, there's still something a little fun about discovering a new place, whether off the beaten path or in its infancy, that you just know is going to become all the rage once the internet gets ahold of it.
Most recently, that place is The Gemini, a quaint seafood spot that quietly opened its doors in mid-June. Offering no reservations hasn't been a problem thus far, as the venture gets its land legs, but glowing early reviews promise it will be soon.
Helmed by Chef Kenneth Envidia, who has made his mark on the city working in kitchens like Black + Blue and Lamesa, the restaurant is something like Toronto's answer to St. Catharines' Les Incompetents — a homey, lived-in atmosphere punctuated with bright, vibrant seafood-forward dishes.
A wide-ranging menu populated with aquatic eats runs the gamut from shrimp tempura and crudo to generous fillets of freshwater catches, and plays nicely with equally attentive wine and amaro lists.
In other words, the team at The Gemini ought to be prepared to become the latest big fish in the already big culinary pond that is Dundas West.
The Gemini is located at 1209A Dundas St. W.
