Toronto is getting a food-forward 5K race this summer

A new 5K race happening in Toronto this summer is just as much about eating as it is about running. Finally, a type of exercise I can get behind.

If you've been in the market to increase your step count this summer but need a particularly juicy carrot dangling in front of you before you pick up the pace, I raise you five juicy carrots.

And by five juicy carrots, I of course mean five hot local eateries in the Little Italy and Queen West area, which are all participating in Toronto's Run & Taste 5K this August.

Billed as "the most delicious 5K you'll ever finish," the run is equal parts food crawl and race, with a food stop situated at each kilometre, ready to fuel you up as you run (or, if you're anything like me, half-run-half-walk) your way to the finish.

The race kicks off at Trinity Bellwoods Park at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 8, and will hit Nadege, Liu Loqum Atelier, Bloomer's, Nutbar and College Street Bagels on its route.

Each participating restaurant will offer runners a tasting that they can opt to linger and savour or take with them on the road, depending on whether they're more in it for the running or the eating aspect. If it were me, well, you know where I'd be.

In the end, each runner will also walk away with commemorative event swag and, even more enticing, a spork-shaped medal for their valour. The jury's still out on whether the medal can or should actually be used for eating, though.

Registration for the run is currently open, priced at $80 for an individual or, if you rally your foodie friends, $280 for a group of four. Runners aged 15 and younger can participate for $60.

I'd tell you to remember to wear your stretchy pants, but seeing as we're exercising, you'll likely already be wearing them.
