We're used to spotting celebrities at swanky steakhouses and stylish bars in Toronto, but almost no one was prepared to see Ronaldinho stroll up to a GTA shawarma counter ahead of his World Cup test match at BMO Field on Friday, May 8.
That's exactly what happened this Thursday, though.
That's not to say that Mississauga's Ridgeway Plaza isn't deserving of its newfound soccer-based spotlight, though. As it happens, the Platinum Drive strip mall got an entire profile in the New York Times earlier this year, as its vibrant dining scene — home to more than 100 restaurants — draws increasingly large crowds.
In all likelihood, that may be how Ronaldinho found out about it. That, or he has a particularly in-the-know plug for local restaurant recommendations. It's fine that he didn't ask me, I'm not bitter or anything.

Regardless, his informant has my seal of approval. On Thursday, May 7, 905 Hub shared a video of the soccer player, widely regarded as one of the greatest of all time, walking into a restaurant at the plaza, flanked by ravenous fans.
His choice of sustenance? None other than Sumaq Iraqi Charcoal Grill, a local staple that also boasts a location in Scarborough. Voted by blogTO readers as serving the best shawarma in the city, and even earning major props from popular TikTok food critic Keith Lee, I can safely say Ronaldinho made a sound decision in his choice of pre-game fuel.
With the Living Legends test match, which will pit Brazilian greats against Toronto FC alumni, set for the evening of Friday, May 8, there may still be even more Ronaldinho sightings. If there was ever a time to stay on the ball, this is it.
