Stalwart Toronto steakhouse announces closure amid 30-year anniversary

A longstanding Toronto steakhouse recently announced it'll be closing down just as it celebrates its 30th year in business, but this story actually has a happy ending.

Well, depending on which neighbourhood you live in.

Toronto is one of the best (if not the best) cities in the world to find any regional cuisine your heart desires. Extending far beyond just restaurants from different countries, you can find food from specific areas of specific countries if you really look for it.

And for the past three decades, Weston-Mount Dennis' New Orleans Seafood & Steakhouse has been a go-to for those craving Creole cuisine.

Serving up the Louisiana-specific take on the fare, which blends African, French, Spanish and Indigenous ingredients, dishes and techniques, the aptly-named New Orleans boasts an expansive menu of staples like gumbo, blackened chicken, and seafood boil on top of fresh-grilled fish and steaks.

It's clear that they're on to something, as 2026 marks the restaurant's 30th year in business — but, as we all know all too well, even the most beloved of local institutions aren't safe from closing their doors.

It looks like New Orleans Seafood & Steakhouse will soon be the latest to do so.

In a social media post shared on Tuesday, Jan. 27, the Cajun restaurant announced that its stalwart Weston-Mount Dennis location on Scarlett Rd. will close permanently after its final service on Jan. 31.

"After 30 years of having you over for dinner, celebrating birthdays, engagements, and all other sorts of events, we will definitely be leaving our establishment with a lot of fond memories," the team writes in the caption of the post.

The city won't be saying goodbye to New Orleans for good, however. The post goes on to explain that the restaurant will soon be moving into "much larger and newly renovated" digs across the Humber River in Etobicoke.

While the exact opening date of New Orleans 2.0 is still up in the air for now, it's taking over the location that formerly housed the equally beloved Cellar Door Restaurant, which, the New Orleans team notes, comes with "the same charm" as its original home.

New Orleans Seafood & Steakhouse is currently located at 267 Scarlett Rd.
