Toronto Blue Jays have officially given up on Jesus Sánchez

The Jesus Sánchez era with the Toronto Blue Jays has officially reached its end.

On Friday, the team announced that it designated Sánchez for assignment and called up a former 25th-round draft pick, Rudy Martin Jr., to serve as his replacement in the Blue Jays outfield.

Sánchez has played 80 games in the outfield for the Blue Jays this season and did not record a single fielding assist. The 28-year-old has been scrutinized by several people around the organization for his ability to play his position.

As things stand, Sánchez leads the MLB when it comes to errors at the left field position with three.

The Toronto Blue Jays acquired Sánchez from the Houston Astros via a trade prior to the 2026 season in exchange for Joey Loperfido.

At the plate this season, Sánchez has hit .260 with eight home runs and 35 RBIs in 299 plate appearances.

The player the Blue Jays called up, Martin, is expected to make his MLB debut after 12 years in the minor leagues on Friday night against the Baltimore Orioles — the team that waived him before Toronto acquired him.

The 30-year-old is known for his speed on the base paths, having stolen 45 bases this season and 239 in his minor-league career.

Martin will likely be up with the team until their forgotten slugger Anthony Santander comes off the injured list sometime next week.
