Sportsnet analyst goes off on player for mistake that cost Toronto Blue Jays a game

A Sportsnet analyst has had enough of Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Jesús Sánchez's "inability" to play his position.

With the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the fourth inning during Wednesday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays, Sánchez lost track of a routine pop-up in left field, allowing two runs to score and turning a one-run game into a three-run deficit.

Blue Jays pitcher Max Scherzer was visibly upset on the mound after Sánchez's drop, and he wasn't the only one.

Following the game, former MLB catcher and current Sportsnet baseball analyst Caleb Joseph was asked what he thought of the play, and he didn't hold back.

Joseph said that, given where the Blue Jays are in the playoff race, Toronto can't afford to have Sánchez playing in the outfield.

"It's not just this one incident; he has an inability to finish the play. This has happened over and over with this player in a Blue Jays uniform," Joseph said.

"He's shown this over the last four to five months, and this is a recurring theme with him. And unless he's hitting 40 homers for me, he can't play in this game. He can't be in the lineup. You have to have good defence out there because that's how they've been winning.

"It's unacceptable. It can't happen, especially with him in the spot they are in the standings right now."

The missed catch against Tampa is just one of several defensive miscues by Sánchez that have led to runs against Toronto this season. A similar error happened against the Minnesota Twins in May and another against the Chicago Cubs in June.

Sánchez has played 73 games for the Blue Jays this season and has yet to record a single fielding assist. At the plate, however, the 28-year-old is hitting slightly above league average, with eight home runs, 33 RBIs and a .319 on-base percentage.

With Wednesday's loss, the Blue Jays fell to 62-66 and sit one game back of an American League Wild Card spot.

The team will have a chance to win its seventh consecutive series on Thursday afternoon when it wraps up its season series against Tampa Bay.
