The 2026 FIFA World Cup gave Toronto soccer fans some entertaining matches over the summer, but nothing quite like what took place on Saturday night at Downsview Park.
Carleton University and Toronto Metropolitan University faced off in the OUA quarterfinals, and with the two sides tied at one after extra time, the game had a penalty shootout for the ages.
The shootout had everything, and there's video to show for it.
A clip of the shootout shared to Instagram has racked up more than 10 million views in the last 24 hours, with some fans already calling it "the most entertaining penalty shootout the sport has ever seen."
And it well on could be.
"What the hell did I just watch," one user commented.
"I was really hoping they would both lose," wrote another.
The madness started the moment Carleton's first penalty shooter placed the ball on the spot. To play mean mind games, TMU's goalkeeper Dante Ferraro immediately booted the ball away.
Ferraro was shown a yellow card, and his actions didn't sit well with Carleton.
Next up from the penalty spot, TMU, but not before Carleton's goalkeeper Nathan Frans followed suit, this time kicking the ball out of the Downsview Park stadium.
He was also shown a yellow card, then watched as the TMU player chipped the ball over him with a cheeky Panenka.
TMU stopped two of Carleton's next four kicks to move on to the OUA semifinals, though not before more on-field pandemonium between the players and fans.
The internet also deserves a rematch between these two teams, preferably on national television — immediately.
