Nightbox Toronto Concert

Hot Ticket: Arcade Fire with Janelle Monae & The Sadies, Biz Markie, Ty Segall, Metz & Anagram, Nightbox, The Wilderness, Bravestation & more

Live music picks for THURSDAY AUGUST 12 through TUESDAY AUGUST 17, 2010.

THURSDAY AUGUST 12 / NIGHTBOX, THE WILDERNESS, BRAVESTATION & MORE / WRONGBAR / 1279 QUEEN ST W / $7 / 19+
Head to Queen West tonight for a local indie rock party at Wrongbar that'll be as easy on the ears as it is on the wallet, featuring performances from five up-and-coming Toronto-based acts: Good Times Running, Freedom or Death, Bravestation, The Wilderness and a headlining set from Nightbox, who recently moved to the city from their previous home in Ireland. When I first saw Nightbox perform (during NXNE this year) I was blown away, and they've been popping up at gigs all around the city ever since, including opening up for Hole at the Sound Academy last month.

FRIDAY AUGUST 13 / METZ (RECORD RELEASE SHOW) / THE SHOP (PARTS & LABOUR) / 1566 QUEEN ST W / $8 / 19+
Metz are throwing a release party for their new 7-inch for "Negative Space/Automat", the third and final Metz vinyl in a series of limited wax pressings that the band has been releasing with the help of We Are Busy Bodies. Like-minded local noisemakers Anagram and Induced Labour will join them for the occasion, ensuring a sweaty and chaotic Friday night at the Shop. Tickets are $8 advance (Rotate, Soundscapes or online) or $10 at the doors. If you can't make it out, you can order the vinyl online.

SATURDAY AUGUST 14 / ARCADE FIRE / TORONTO OLYMPIC ISLAND / $47+ FEES / ALL AGES
It's been a great week for Arcade Fire and their label Merge Records, with the Montreal based collective landing the number one album on the Billboard charts, selling 156,000 copies during its first week on the shelves and online. They'll celebrate both their commerical success and an abundance of glowing reviews for The Suburbs with their own Toronto Island mini-festival, featuring opening sets from Kansas City soul singer Janelle Monรƒยกe at and local legends The Sadies. To get you even more excited for the show, check out a live video of the Arcade Fire from their show at MSG last week, directed by Terry Gilliam.

SUNDAY AUGUST 15 / TY SEGALL / SONIC BOOM (IN-STORE) / 512 BLOOR ST W / FREE / ALL AGES
Ty Segall will play a 6pm in-store set at Sonic Boom on Sunday, just a few hours before they're scheduled to take the stage at The Shop in Parts & Labour, where they'll be joined by Royal Baths (formerly Baths), Teenanger and Estrogen Highs for a night of garage punk mayhem.

TUESDAY AUGUST 17 / BIZ MARKIE / SOUND ACADEMY / 11 POLSON ST / $13.75 / 19+
Biz Markie makes his triumphant return to Toronto on Tuesday night, bringing the party to the Sound Academy with help from Scratch (best known for his affiliation with the Roots) and the Team Canada DJs. It's been eight months since Biz brought his stage show to CiRCA, and this time he'll be delivering more than just a DJ set.
