**Join us for the Toronto premiere of INSURGENCE! A collective interpretation of Quebec's Maple Spring, this super-charged doc will have you reaching for your red square and gas mask. Filmmakers from Groupe d'action en cinéma Épopée will be in attendance. Community activist and artist Stefan Christoff will present his zine on the Quebec student strike "Le fond de l’air est rouge". Co-presented with our Toronto locals Cinema Politica York, Cinema Politica Danforth & Cinema Politica U of T, Point of View Magazine, the Toronto Anarchist Fair, Toronto Anarchist Black Cross and Toronto Media Co-op.
Groupe d'action en cinéma Épopée / Canada / 2013 / 137 ' / French - English / S.T. English
Insurgence is a documentary about the vast social mobilization that took place in Quebec during the spring of 2012. Initially propelled by the student strike for accessible education, the scope of the movement soon broadened to take on the government, the impunity and violence of the Montreal police force, the exploitation of untapped natural resources, and the current economic system.
The strength of the “Printemps Érable” is rooted in anonymity. The shared experience of the movement flows through dispersal, reaching into the solitude of each protester. Each one recognizes her situation in that of the others; affective resonance is transmuted to a point of fusion. Repression can only break up linear collectivities; here, at every turn, at every corner, the common returns in a swarm.
Épopée is a collective of filmmakers and film craftspeople, created during the making of Men for Sale, a documentary about the lives of drug users and sex workers in Montreal. The group was also formed in the context of the digital revolution and the takeover of national cinemas by television and large distributors. Épopée reclaims the means of film production through a newfound creative and collective process. Between 2009 and 2012, Épopée set up a project in collaboration with sex workers and drug users in Montreal’s Centre-Sud neighborhood. The project resulted in a website (epopee.me), two feature films (The State of the Moment and The State of the World), and several gallery installations.

Just 2 more Handlebar shows left in 2013! This one is one of, if not the most quite show we've put on at the venue. Night starts with Braeden Mitchell at 9:30. Elise Epp sometimes plays solo and sometimes with friends for this show she will be playing as a duo. Classically trained Elise takes her classical style and combines with it with a great ear for current indie-pop music. Set time: 11:05.
