Cease proving doubters wrong after Toronto Blue Jays pitcher voted worst offseason signing

Dylan Cease is getting the last laugh. 

There were mixed reactions last winter when Cease inked a seven-year, $210 million contract with the Toronto Blue Jays. The talent was evident, but the 30-year-old was coming off a so-so season with the San Diego Padres, and some thought it was a bit too big of a commitment. 

Those feelings were shared by a pre-season poll done by The Athletic in February that was conducted with three dozen current or former high-ranking MLB personnel. When asked who was the worst signing of the offseason, Cease ranked at the top of the list. 

Just over four months into the season, and that couldn't be further from the truth.

In fact, Cease may have been the best winter signing across the entire league, as he has been one of the most lethal pitchers in the entire American League and is currently putting together a push for the Cy Young. 

The Blue Jays may not be performing up to snuff, but Cease has more than held up his end of the bargain in the first year of his new contract. The 30-year-old pitcher currently boasts a 2.46 ERA and a +4.1 WAR through 19 starts this season, and he leads the AL with 167 strikeouts.

He also featured as the starting pitcher for the AL at the recent All-Star Game in Philadelphia, where he struck out the side in his one inning of work. 

Cease is coming off an amazing complete-game shutout where he allowed just one hit against the Boston Red Sox through all nine innings on Saturday.

The Blue Jays haven't had the season they wanted this year, but they should have no regrets about shelling out the money to land Cease on a long-term deal.
