The Darcys

Hot Ticket: The Darcys, The Barr Brothers, Trust, The Walkmen, & recently announced concerts

Live music picks for TUESDAY, February 28 through MONDAY, March 5, 2012.

THURSDAY MARCH 1 / THE DARCYS / THE PHOENIX / 410 SHERBOURNE STREET / $18.50 / ALL AGES
Bombay Bicycle Club is playing in Toronto this week. They've gotten a lot of buzz in their native England, but they're not the only reason one should visit the Phoenix on Thursday night. No, the big reason I think you should head to the show is that one of Toronto's much-loved bands, The Darcys, are finally home after a long stretch on the road. In the span of months, the Darcys have released two excellent albums — both of which you can download for free on their site — they're also fantastic live.

THURSDAY MARCH 1 / THE BARR BROTHERS / THE GREAT HALL / 1087 QUEEN STREET W / $15.00 / 19+

It's not often that you find a rock band with a harp player, but that's just one of the many instruments the Barr Brothers have at their disposal. The band, composed of brothers Andrew and Brad Barr, and their two friends, Sarah Page and Andres Vial, seamlessly meld a wide variety of genres into a cohesive whole with deft musical expertise. Those looking to check out something a bit different would do well to go to the Great Hall on Thursday.

FRIDAY MARCH 2 / THE WALKMEN / THE PHOENIX / 410 SHERBOURNE STREET / $26.00 / 19+

New York City via Philadelphia band, the Walkmen, return to Toronto on Friday. The group is still touring in support of their 2010 effort, Lisbon, though most won't mind as that was a standout record. The group is known for explosive live shows, so a visit to the Phoenix on Friday might very well be worth it.

SATURDAY MARCH 3 / TRUST / WRONGBAR / 1279 QUEEN STREET W / $10.50 / 19+

Trust, consisting of vocalist Robert Alfons and drummer Maya Postepski, she of Austra fame, is set to release their debut album on Saturday at Wrongbar. And while the group may receive comparisons to Postepski's other, better-known project, there's a decidedly darker atmosphere that pervades this band's music. In any case, they're definitely one to watch out for 2012.
