Housing development project forcing Toronto grocery store location to shut down

A FreshCo location in Toronto will serve its final customers over the next couple of months as it prepares to close its doors this fall.

The FreshCo, located at Dupont Street in Toronto, has been a neighbourhood staple for more than a decade, since it first opened in the Galleria Shopping Centre in the early 2010s.

"Our FreshCo store at Dupont & Dufferin has been proud to serve the neighbourhood and be part of our customers' daily meals and food traditions. On Oct. 17, 2026, FreshCo Dupont & Dufferin will close permanently," a Sobeys representative tells blogTO.

They also confirm the closure results from a project in which the site will be "redeveloped for housing."

The aforementioned project is part of a multi-year redevelopment plan in which Galleria Shopping Centre is being transformed into a mixed-use community of condominiums, green spaces, and stores called Galleria on the Park.

Construction on the project, helmed by real estate developers Almadev, is well underway, and the scale of the transformation is becoming increasingly visible. The 20-acre development is ultimately planned to include eight residential towers, new retail and office space, an eight-acre park, and a massive community centre.

Construction on the first two residential towers began in 2020, while work on the new park and community centre got underway in 2022, and construction has also begun on the third tower, Galleria III.

As per a staff report dating back to May 2018, the FreshCo grocery store would remain in operation throughout the "first phases of the redevelopment." The report also notes that the store's owners planned to open a new grocery store before officially demolishing the existing FreshCo.

The representative did not confirm if a new grocery store will replace the existing location.

As of now, FreshCo remains open to the public until Oct. 17 and is located at 1245 Dupont St.
