Toronto hospital ranked third-best in the world for second year in a row

A Toronto hospital was just recognized as the third-best medical institution in the world for the second year in a row. 

UHN's Toronto General Hospital (TGH) was just rated the third-best overall hospital and the top publicly-funded hospital in the world by Newsweek magazine's 2025 global ranking. Released on Wednesday, it recognizes top-performing hospitals across 30 countries. 

Similar to last year, TGH placed behind just two notable U.S. medical institutions: the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota and the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. 

The list ranked a whopping 2,445 hospitals, including 420 in the U.S., and highlights institutions based on peer reccomendations, quality indicators and a new bibliometrics store. 

According to the report, this year's ranking placed "increased importance on hospitality quality indicators and Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) implementation, incorporates expanded accreditations... and integrates new patient experience data sources." 

UHN's Princess Margaret Cancer Centre was also ranked as Canada's top specialized onocology hospital and in the top 10 in the world, while UHN's Toronto Western Hospital also placed among the top 10 hospitals in Canada for the second year in a row. 

"These are all amazing achievements, which together firmly establish UHN's national and international leadership as Canada's No. 1 hospital, and highlight our influential role as a global leader in health care, in education and in research," said Dr. Kevin Smith, UHN's President and CEO, in a release.

"Our place as the top publicly-funded hospital in the world is a resounding testament to the fact that the Canadian way of doing things really works."

5. Karolinska Universitetssjukhuset – Stockholm, Sweden
6. Massachusetts General Hospital – Boston, Massachusetts
7. Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin in Berlin, Germany
8. Sheba Medical Center – Ramat Gan, Israel
9. Singapore General Hospital (SGH) – Singapore
10. Universitätsspital Zürich – Zürich, Switzerland
