Hotel to open at controversial new $1 billion Toronto casino next month

Just weeks after its long-awaited debut, Toronto's new Great Canadian Casino Resort has revealed when patrons can add overnight accommodation to their visit to the sprawling $1 billion complex.

On August 1, the 33-acre attraction on Rexdale Blvd. near Highways 427 and 401 will launch its brand new 400-room hotel, which it says "promises an extraordinary experience, blending modernity, comfort and excitement under one roof."

The new building overlooks the Woodbine Racetrack next door, and will eventually also offer a wellness area including a heated pool, steam room, hot tub and gym, all opening in stages over the coming weeks.

In addition to the existing 24/7 casino — which is the largest in Canada with 4,800 slot machines, 145 live table games, VIP rooms and more over 328,000 square feet — a 5,000-person theatre for live entertainment is also on the way, as well as a 30-table poker room later this month.

And, of course, the property has 15 retail locations and a number of dining options, from an upscale steakhouse and a cocktail bar to healthy takeout meals and fast-food staples.

The expansion of the Woodbine Racetrack facility was contended by some city councillors and residents alike who worried about "the social costs" of the project and its encouragement of gambling, which seems a null point now that betting adds are everywhere following the loosening of gambling laws in Ontario.

Indigenous groups also pushed back against the project, saying that it went against mediation efforts and existing agreements they had with the provincial government.

For those interested in being among the first through the new hotel's doors next month, reservations are already available.
