Here's what happens if you bring a phone on Canada's Wonderland coasters

If you've ever been on a roller coaster at Canada's Wonderland and wondered why it came to a sudden stop, there's a pretty good chance that a phone was the culprit.

A clip posted on Instagram this week by @amusementinsiders shows exactly what happens when a park guest takes their phone out while riding the Leviathan at Canada's Wonderland.

In the video, the coaster comes to a sudden stop as it climbs towards its peak, and soon after, a staff member is heard over the speakers telling guests to put their phones away and raise their hands to ensure that there are no loose items on the ride.

As the person behind the video explains, the sudden stop can be especially startling for those who aren’t familiar with the park's policy on loose items, and may leave some people anxiously wondering what’s happening.

The short clip prompted lots of commentary online, with some arguing that those who take their phones out on rides should be ejected from the park due to the potential damage a dropped device could cause.

When asked how the park handles phones on its rides, a spokesperson for Canada's Wonderland pointed blogTO to the park's strict loose article policy, which states that items, including purses, backpacks, stuffed animals, hats, keys, and mobile devices, are prohibited on rides.

"We're bringing extra awareness to this policy now because we want to emphasize that mobile phones are included in this list of restricted items. Everyone these days is on social media, connected to their phones, filming video or snapping selfies," the park wrote on its website back in 2023.

"There is no shortage of fun experiences to capture at the park through photos or videos. Yet while we typically enjoy seeing guests sharing their park experiences on social, we do not want guests taking pictures or videos while on the rides."

In a separate blog on its website, the park also notes that due to the no-loose-articles policy on its rides, operators may halt rides until that guest secures it again.

"Our ride operators also mention it over the speaker before every ride cycle. If a guest is seen on the ride with an unsecured phone or other loose item out on the ride, that guest will be warned and could face possible ejection from the park, without refund. If the guest is a Season Passholder, the pass could be revoked."
