Blue Jays rookie had emotional moment with cancer-fighting mom after MLB debut

It was a special moment in more ways than one for Toronto Blue Jays rookie Ricky Tiedemann. 

The 23-year-old pitcher made his long-awaited MLB debut on Saturday afternoon against the New York Yankees. Tiedemann threw 1.2 innings, allowing two hits, one earned run, and recorded his first two major league strikeouts. 

It may not have been a perfect first outing, but Tiedemann ultimately helped the Blue Jays pick up a critical 4-1 victory over the Yankees. The moment has been a long time coming for the 2021 draft pick, and he was able to share it with his cancer-fighting mother after the game. 

According to Sportsnet's Shi Davidi, Tiedemann FaceTimed his mom, Mimi, who is in California recovering from a double mastectomy as she battles breast cancer. 

"She's doing good. They caught it early on, and we're figuring it out. She was watching [the game] on TV," Tiedemann told Davidi. "I showed her the field, showed her everybody that was here. It was good. It was special."

After taking pics on the field with his family post-game, Ricky Tiedemann made an emotional FaceTime call to his mom, Mimi, who is back home in California recovering from a double masectomy. She'd recently been diagnosed with breast cancer and had the surgery last week.

Tiedemann was once regarded as the Blue Jays' top prospect, but a slew of injuries, including Tommy John surgery in 2024, caused him to slide down the rankings over the past few years. Those setbacks also delayed his MLB debut, but he is looking to take full advantage of the opportunity in front of him. 

"It's surreal, I really don't think it's sunk in yet," Tiedemann said after his debut. "It was definitely exciting and nerve-wracking, but it was awesome at the same time. 

"It was a long road, but we got through it, and we came out better for it. I came out a better player, a better teammate. So, it was a lot of trials and tribulations, but we made it out, and we're feeling good." 

He has only pitched a total of seven innings across three leagues this season, but the Jays are in a position where they are handing a bit of responsibility over to the youth. So far, it's a strategy that has worked, as Toronto woke up on Sunday morning just a half-game back of the Texas Rangers for the last AL wildcard spot. 

It was a short-lived MLB stint for Tiedemann as the Blue Jays optioned him back to Triple-A on Sunday morning as Brendon Little returned from the paternity list. Still, the rookie will be hungry for more after getting his first taste of the major leagues.
