Toronto Blue Jays eyeing Japanese power hitter to make potential free-agent splash

The Toronto Blue Jays are already looking toward offseason moves, and they reportedly have their eyes on one of the biggest bats expected to hit free agency.

According to Mitch Bannon of The Athletic, the Blue Jays are expected to pursue Chicago Cubs outfielder Seiya Suzuki should he hit free agency this winter. The 32-year-old from Tokyo is expected to cash in big after what was one of the best offensive seasons of his career in 2026.

Suzuki hit .270 with 26 home runs, 86 RBIs and an .841 OPS across 143 games for the Cubs this season. His 26 home runs would have ranked second on the Blue Jays behind only Kazuma Okamoto's 33. 

Suzuki has also established himself as a consistent power threat since joining the Cubs from Japan in 2022. He has hit at least 20 home runs in each of the past four seasons and owns a career .269 batting average and .823 OPS.

The reported interest makes sense for Toronto after the Blue Jays finished the 2026 season with significant offensive issues. Their 648 runs scored and 152 home runs both ranked dead last in the MLB.

Right field could also be an area Toronto looks to address this winter. Anthony Santander missed the entire 2026 season, leaving Jesús Sánchez and Nathan Lukes to handle much of the work at the position.

Adding Suzuki would give the Blue Jays another established middle-of-the-order bat and potentially fill a major hole in their lineup.

Plenty of time remains before free agency gets underway, and the Blue Jays will not be the only team interested in Suzuki. But after missing the playoffs one year after reaching the World Series, Toronto appears poised to explore significant additions this offseason.

For now, Suzuki appears to be one of the names firmly on the Blue Jays' radar.
