Will Yankees trade for Toronto Blue Jays' George Springer?

The New York Yankees could be eyeing one of the Toronto Blue Jays' most popular players ahead of next week's MLB trade deadline.

According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Yankees are in the market for a right-handed-hitting outfielder after injuries to Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger and Giancarlo Stanton, and Blue Jays veteran George Springer is on the shortlist of the club's potential targets.

With Toronto 10 games below .500 and expected to be sellers at the Aug. 3 deadline, Springer will likely be one of the biggest names available.

The designated hitter and outfielder is in the final season of his six-year contract with the Blue Jays and is set to become a free agent after the 2026 season.

For any contender, Springer has that playoff and big moment experience, bringing exactly what teams want come October.

Despite Springer being in the latter stages of his career, he's rightfully earned a reputation as one of baseball's best postseason performers – just ask any Blue Jays fan.

New York won't acquire him won't come easily.

Springer has 10-and-5 rights, meaning he's played at least 10 years in the major leagues and the past five seasons with the same club. Under MLB rules, he would have to approve any trade before it could be completed.

Whether the 36-year-old would be willing to waive those rights for a Blue Jays rival is another big question.

For his entire career, Springer has been consistently booed at Yankee Stadium for the 2017 Houston Astros sign-stealing scandal that Yankees fans feel cost New York a World Series birth that year.

It also didn't help that Springer went on to play for one of the Yankees' biggest rivals.

Despite Toronto and New York being in the same division, the two franchises have rarely completed trades with one another. The last deadline-day deal came eight years ago when the Blue Jays sent J.A. Happ to the Yankees in exchange for Brandon Drury and Billy McKinney.

The Yankees may not be the only team interested in Springer.

Following Sunday's loss to the Chicago White Sox, Houston Astros general manager Dana Brown said adding an outfield bat is the organization's top priority at the deadline – a move that could potentially reunite Springer with his former club.
