Toronto Stadium additions already being torn down after FIFA World Cup matches

After three incredible weeks and six FIFA World Cup matches, Toronto Stadium is already being torn down.

Despite there still being two weeks left in the tournament, with no games left in Toronto, the clock has started to tick down to the venue's reintroduction as BMO Field in time for August.

Just a few hours after the Portugal-Croatia match ended, the local organizing committee already started dismantling the 43,000-seat temporary stadium.

The FIFA Toronto-branded wrapping was the first thing to be removed, along with signage around the grounds.

Over the next few weeks, the 17,000 added seats at the north and south ends of the stadium will be disassembled, and the field will return to its regular capacity of 28,180.

The City of Toronto added the temporary seating to meet FIFA's minimum stadium capacity requirement of 40,000 in order to be a host city for this tournament.

Though it was the smallest, Toronto Stadium was only one of five purpose-built soccer stadiums among the tournament's 16 host venues.

Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE) are planning to make several permanent upgrades to the stadium now that the FIFA World Cup is over.

The six BMO Field signs removed for the tournament will be replaced with illuminated, overhanging signs. An additional electronic sign will also reportedly be installed along the upper roof edge above the north scoreboard.

The local organizing committee will hand over the stadium on July 22, and MLSE will work on getting BMO Field ready before its two tenants, Toronto Argonauts and Toronto FC, return home in August.
