John Schneider may never fully get over the Toronto Blue Jays' World Series loss to the LA Dodgers.
The Blue Jays skipper, who helped lead his team to an AL-best 94-68 record through the regular season, met with media members yesterday to discuss the future of his team. Of course, there were also plenty of questions about coming oh-so-close to a World Series championship.
"I think I'll think about it until the day I leave this earth, unless you get another opportunity to squash that one," Schneider said. "There's so many things that get highlighted. There's the play at home, there's the [Andy] Pages catch, there's the home run from Miguel Rojas, and that's just Game 7."
The play at home, of course, refers to Isiah Kiner-Falefa being just inches from scoring what would have been the World Series clinching run. The 30-year-old was instead thrown out at home plate and has received heavy criticism for not taking a bigger lead at third base.
Schneider, however, defended Kiner-Falefa in that moment and instead chose to put some of the blame on himself and the coaching staff.
"Could we have done a better job at getting him off [the bag] a little bit? Ya. Another step or two," Schneider admitted. "There's been video of [third base coach] Carlos [Febles] telling him where to go. What's not talked about enough is the fact that Will Smith likes to back pick to third with left-handed hitters up.
"We could've told him to get off a bit more. It stings. It hurts. I've seen that video 3,000 times. In 1,500 of them, it looks like Will's off the plate, and in the other half, it looks like he's on. That's how close it was. That's why details matter."
As disappointing an ending as it was to the Blue Jays' season, their lengthy playoff run bodes well for the future of the organization. It garnered the attention of players across the league, and has already helped them land a massive free-agent in starting pitcher Dylan Cease.
The Blue Jays aren't done adding, either. They are still looking to re-sign Bo Bichette and have heavy interest in four-time All-Star Kyle Tucker. They are also continuing to search for bullpen help, and have been linked to closer Robert Suarez.
Factor all these changes and potential upgrades in, and it's easy to see why the future looks very bright for this Blue Jays team.
