Justin Bieber just had a cringeworthy Toronto Maple Leafs draft moment

It was no secret that Gavin McKenna would be the Toronto Maple Leafs' first-overall pick at the 2026 NHL Draft.

Though, who announced the pick caught a lot of fans by surprise.

Moments before the Maple Leafs went on the clock, Canadian music icon and longtime Leafs fan Justin Bieber appeared inside Buffalo's KeyBank Center holding a microphone.

It quickly became apparent that Bieber didn't rehearse the moment, since he wasn't entirely sure where he was supposed to go.

After making his way onto the draft stage, Bieber turned to NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and asked whether he should "go for it."

Bieber then awkwardly yelled:

"Mr. McKenna, we would like to draft you to the Toronto Maple Leafs."

The awkwardness didn't end there.

Rather than stepping aside after making the announcement, Bieber didn't move. He stood right beside Bettman on stage as McKenna had his moment and received his jersey.

McKenna walked up to the stage to Bieber's hit song "Yukon," a song about an SUV that shares the name with the place where the 18-year-old is from.

Bieber also joined McKenna during his post-draft interview with Sportsnet, once again becoming part of the spotlight that many fans say should have been McKenna's moment.

He finally shook the popstar when they left the stage, but Bieber did promise he would be at more games during the 2026-27 season.

McKenna has long been considered the top prospect in the 2026 NHL Draft.

He put up a ridiculous 41 goals and 129 points with the Medicine Hat Tigers during the 2024-25 WHL season, then moved to Penn State University for 2025-26 and finished with 15 goals and 51 points in 35 NCAA games.

Bieber wasn't the only celebrity involved in Friday night's draft.

Laila Edwards, who recently joined San Jose's new PWHL franchise, announced the Sharks' second-overall pick, and actor Cobie Smulders of How I Met Your Mother recorded a video message for the Vancouver Canucks' third-overall pick.

Unless Toronto makes a trade, the Maple Leafs won't be back on the clock until the second round, where they currently hold the 60th overall pick.

Whenever the pick happens to be, we just hope it's less cringe.
