One of Toronto's biggest outdoor music festivals — VELD — returned this past weekend, and this year's event offered a variety of performances, DJ sets, and... a fake Deadmau5 who came storming the stage and ended up losing his pants in the mix.
VELD-goers were in for a spectacle on Sunday during Deadmau5's set change, as a seemingly unsanctioned lookalike ambushed the stage.
During the struggle, the phony Deadmau5 even got a bit violent — using his fake ear to fend security off — and then eventually had his pants pulled down as guards grappled with the stage invader.
The interesting part here is that people are debating whether this was all part of the act — set up by the real Deadmau5 himself — or if this was indeed a stage intruder.
Toronto is torn. They don't know.
One spectator makes a point to highlight how security dealt with the "situation": "Judging by the way security descended on that dude like a pack of wolves, I'm gonna guess this wasn't part of the plan." Only for another to say, "You mean when they slowly walked over to him?"
And that's not all. The uncertainty continues as people scrutinize the footage taken by thousands of music lovers over the weekend.
"That is so bizarre. And it looks like he actually whacked someone with an ear. Whyyyy. And why spend so much on a Mau5 head and the Amiri gear just to fuck it up."
One Deadmau5 fan comes in with a great observation: "Nah probably not him, the helmet's mouth is black instead of gold."
All of this was simple speculation, though, until Deadmau5 himself put out a statement from what seems to be his official Reddit account: "Dude, I have NO fucking clue wtf that was, it was like half way through set change... so I didn't know wtf was going on until I started walking back, some fucking YouTuber idiot last I heard."
Is that enough to put the rumour to bed that a wannabe Deadmau5 jumped on stage and caused chaos for his five seconds of fame? Toronto will be the judge of that.
VELD wrapped up on Sunday, and Toronto is already gearing up for what's to come next year.
