Closed luxury supermarket in Toronto reopening as No Frills this week

A massive retail space that once housed a luxury grocery store in North York is getting a major makeover and will reopen as a No Frills this week.

The Loblaw-owned discount supermarket will be opening at the Hullmark Centre this week, at the southeast corner of Yonge Street and Sheppard Avenue East, where a Whole Foods Market previously operated.

The arrival of the No Frills store comes just over a year after Whole Foods confirmed it would be shuttering its Hullmark Centre location, along with its Leaside store at 1860 Bayview Ave. The Texas-based natural and organic grocer announced the closures last summer, with the Toronto stores officially shutting down on Aug. 22, 2025.

"Like any retail business, we regularly evaluate each of our stores and make decisions to position the company for long-term success. We are actively exploring new sites to expand our footprint in Canada and look forward to opening more stores," a Whole Foods spokesperson told blogTO at the time.

The company also said it was committed to supporting affected team members while continuing to grow its Canadian business by adding new stores. The upscale chain first entered the Canadian market over two decades ago with a location in Yorkville.

The new No Frills store is set to have its grand opening on Sept. 17, and from there, will operate seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. The closest existing No Frills is located further north along Yonge Street at Centerpoint Mall, but the new Hullmark Centre location will undoubtedly face some direct competition from the Food Basics located just across Yonge, south of Sheppard Avenue.

Although the Whole Foods at Hullmark Centre location is no more, the company is still planning to expand its footprint in Toronto with a new store slated to open near King Street West and Portland Street at the base of the KING Toronto development.

The upcoming store, which doesn't have an official opening date yet, is set to span approximately 30,000 square feet, with roughly 5,000 square feet at street level and another 25,000 square feet on the lower level.

The most recent switchover from Whole Foods to No Frills is just the latest grocery shuffle that's happened along Yonge Street over the past few months. Earlier this year, Metro announced that its location at 20 Church Ave., just south of Yonge and Finch, would be closing on Aug. 13 before reopening as a new Food Basics store later this fall.

Just down the road, the former Loblaws at RioCan Empress at 5095 Yonge St. also closed its doors last October to make way for a new T&T Supermarket, which is set to open up on Oct. 8.
