How House of McGrath is continuing the legacy of Toronto's Comstock building

Something special has arrived on the Toronto dining scene. House of McGrath is a new restaurant that gives the phrase "family dinner" a whole new meaning.

Born and raised in Toronto, co-founder Matthew McGrath came across the vacant Comstock Building and saw a unique opportunity to reignite a piece of history while restoring its long-standing reputation as a gathering place.

Now, along with his wife, Michele, and four children, he’s doing just that.

Inside House of McGrath

Named after the McGrath family, House of McGrath is a family affair, co-owned by Matthew and Michele, with all four children involved. The restaurant exists as a time capsule of the space, while offering a uniquely holistic experience, where each level offers a different vibe.

Upstairs, you can expect a more refined, dining-focused experience. Feast upon seasonal cuisine with locally sourced ingredients, like herb-roasted duck confit and vegan mushroom wellington — all while enjoying a house-brewed beer, of course.

A carefully curated wine list completes the drink menu, and the cocktail program is built around Canadian spirits.

Meanwhile, downstairs is more intimate and social, complete with live music and pool.

When you make a reservation, you can expect to enjoy a full evening. From indulging in a delicious dinner to relaxing the lower lounge, who knows where the night will take you?!

 A family affair

The cuisine draws inspiration from Matthew and Michele’s heritage. Matthew’s side of the family is Irish Catholic, while Michele’s is Brazilian, but as for the modern McGrath clan, all are fundamentally Torontonian.

Food at House of McGrath centres on generational European cooking with a contemporary twist, drawing on the diverse flavour and spice combinations found in Toronto and its various diasporas. Where else can you enjoy beef stew and feijoada while bossa nova and 1940s jazz play in the background?

House of McGrath also reflects an inclusive approach to hospitality, with a thoughtful range of plant-based and dietary restriction-friendly options. For Victoria McGrath, the eldest McGrath daughter and VP of Operations, who follows a plant-based diet, these dishes don’t feel like afterthoughts and instead stand on their own as creative, satisfying parts of the menu.

The McGrath family grew up in a house that was always full of people, food, and music. In many ways, House of McGrath is a bigger version of that, where anyone who walks through the door can be part of the family.

Experience it for yourself by booking a reservation online and checking out House of McGrath at 75 Victoria St., in the Comstock Building.
