Dot cakes are the latest viral food sensation to sweep the internet, and the trend has finally made its way to bakeries across Toronto. I've got the whole, sprinkle-loaded scoop on where you can find them.
But first things first, what actually is a dot cake? If your social media feed has somehow managed to skirt under the viral dessert's technicoloured radar, let me give you a quick rundown.
In May 2026, the single-serving cakes from New York City's The Dot Cakes began making their rounds on TikTok and Instagram Reels in a big way. A relatively short jump from the standard cupcake, these cakes owe their internet fame to the thick layer of multicoloured nonpareils packed into the generous layer of frosting to form a crust across the top.
Search the term on your social media of choice, and you'll be met with a swath of influencers dragging metal spoons across the top layer of sprinkles for that good ASMR effect, before plunging them deep into the cup, revealing a cross-section that's more or less equal parts icing to cake.
It was only a matter of time before Toronto residents started knocking down the doors of local bakeries, demanding our very own version of the cakes to try, and the city's bakers, being the martyrs they are, have been only too happy to oblige.
So, if you've been dying to pick up a dot cake of your own, here's where you can find them in Toronto.
Perhaps the first local venture to take a stab at the dot cake trend was Midtown micro-bakery Mily Sweets. Operated by a pair of sisters, a considerable social media push, thanks to this viral addition to their menu, launched the business to new heights in a mere matter of days.
Being a truly grassroots operation, orders are limited, so you'll have to keep an eye on their social media to catch their next drop. Not to fear, though, because other bakeries around the city are hopping on the bandwagon, too.
Becked Goods announced the addition of dot cakes — which feature cream cheese icing — to their menu with the simple statement, "We did what had to be done."
At XO Bisous, their "extra" take on the cake is served inside a coffee cup, while Avenue and Lawrence's Short & Sweet Cupcakes makes them in five flavours: chocolate, vanilla, red velvet, carrot and Oreo.
A version that's more inspired than directly adapted, Andrea's Cookies also has a dot cake-themed cookie coming out on June 3.
If the city's past history of falling head over heels for internet food trends is any indication, this is just the beginning of what's sure to be a beautiful, dot cake-fuelled run.
