The time has come for one of Toronto's most famous old-school diners as its owners gear up to close its doors after more than 70 years.
Officially opening its doors in 1953, long before the majority of Toronto's population was a mere twinkle in their parents' eyes, the Patrician Grill has been a landmark of King East for generations.
In 1967, the restaurant was sold to the Papas family, who've kept its legacy alive for nearly 60 years: a decidedly significant slice of the pie that is the restaurant's impressively lengthy stint in business.
Still, if the recent closures of local institutions like Imperial Pub after 80 years and San Francesco Foods after 70 can remind us of anything, it's that nothing lasts forever.
Even the longest-standing, best-loved businesses aren't immune to the hands of time, and, according to a recent announcement from owner Terry Papas, the Patrician Grill will be the next institution to close its doors for good.
"The time has come for us to embark on the next chapter of our lives: retirement," reads an announcement sent to blogTO by current owner Terry and his sister, Mary Papas, the children of Louie and Helen Papas, who originally took the restaurant over back in 1967.
"It is with a mixture of emotions that we announce we will be closing our doors for the final time at 2:00pm on Saturday, May 9th, 2026," the announcement reads.
For Terry's part, he has been a fixture at the restaurant since 1987. In 2000, he was joined by brother-in-law Chris Slifkas, who took over as Head Chef while Terry oversaw front-of-house operations.
Together, the two have been the driving force keeping the restaurant alive through a bounty of challenges for more than a quarter century.
"Together, their dedication kept the restaurant a true family enterprise," the closure announcement reads. "Although the business faced difficult economic times, the family persevered through hard work and long hours."
Still, even the highest degree of commitment comes with an expiration date, and, for The Patrician Grill, it's here.
On an Instagram Reel announcing the closure, local residents and businesses alike were quick to respond with an emphatic mix of sadness and congratulations.
"I DO NOT ACCEPT THESE TERMS," comments the Instagram account for Leslieville bar Lloyd's on Queen.
"Icons. You've earned this," writes Caplansky's Diner founder Zane Caplansky.
The Old Town Toronto BIA writes, "You've always been a vital part of our neighbourhood. We'll miss you dearly."
On the bright side, the Patrician Grill team have given the people of Toronto plenty of advance notice before the closure takes effect, so you can still swing by for a couple of final meals before it's gone for good in mid-May.
The Patrician Grill is located at 219 King St. E.
