A once-popular Toronto sandwich shop that's been closed for nearly a year is about to open a new, permanent location.
The day is nearly here: Slammie Sammies is making its epic return to the Toronto food scene this weekend, as the sandwich shop gears up for the grand opening of its first-ever permanent location.
Founded by Pedro Dos Santos and Marilyn Simms of Vert Casse-Croûte Catering in the spring of 2024, Slammie Sammies first made its mark on the city while operating out of the beloved, now-defunct (but replaced by the equally great Roxton Pub) Opera Bob's.
Serving what Dos Santos and Simms describe as "sloppy, messy, two-hander sandwiches," Slammie Sammies gained its reputation for precisely that: whopping sandwiches that leave you scraping every last bit of filling off the wrapping once it's done.
Grilled Chicken Tzatziki, Vietnamese Sweet Beef, and Shrimp Po Boy were all among the sandwich venture's best-sellers before it fell into a sudden hiatus with the closure of Opera Bob's.
Now, the sandwich shop has secured a new location — fittingly, in a space that once housed a Subway location — and is preparing to open its doors within a matter of days.
Sure, Toronto already has plenty of sandwich shops as it is (and more keep coming by the day), but what kind of person complains about more sandwiches in the world? These are hard times we're living in, and a fantastic sandwich can always put a smile on someone's face, so I say keep them coming.
Slammie Sammies' brand-new permanent location officially opens for business from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. this Friday, Oct. 10 and Saturday, Oct. 11. Not a bad opportunity to get a carwash while you're at it.
Slammie Sammies is located at 828 Eastern Ave.
