5 new cafes in Toronto you need to try at least once

New cafes in Toronto that you need to try are serving up your much-needed daily dose of java (or matcha) with flair.

From Vietnamese spots that let you pair a banh mi with your latte to vibrant hidden gems serving up Mexican treats, these cafes will give you the chance to spice up your next coffee run.

Here are my picks for the new cafes in Toronto you need to try at least once.

Humble Donkey

Located in the heart of the newly opened Union Hotel, this groovy spot with a fable-like name is a comfortable refuge for travellers staying at the hotel and the hustle-and-bustlers who call the Financial District home alike.

Serving as the nucleus of a Toronto-themed hotel, it's only fitting that the cafe is supplied by a selection of the city's favourite vendors, including baked goods from Breadhead and coffee from Sam James.

Fusettes

Taking over a defunct Starbucks location and convincing its past regulars to open their minds to something new is no small feat, but, in the case of this Yonge and College coffee shop, it was no problem.

Here, you can sip on coffee-based beverages made with Detour beans while nibbling on baked goods from local favourites Dear Grain and Tori's Bakeshop or, if you're hungry for something more substantial, opt for one of seven options on their banh mi menu.

Fusettes transformed a defunct Starbucks location into a lively cafe.

Wey Cup

This brand-new addition to the Annex's already buzzing coffee scene proudly boasts "Mexican vibes" which come in the form of Mexican treats like fluffy concha and quesadillas alongside smoothies, coffee-based beverages and beyond.

They don't stop at edible offerings, though; you can also find an impressive selection of handmade trinkets and vintage clothes at the cafe, and walk away with full shopping bags to match your full belly.

Amber Kitchen and Coffee

Taking over the space left behind by Boxcar Social's shuttered Riverside location, this new venture from George Grabsky, the Executive Chef at Parallel Brothers, serves up a deeply droolworthy food menu drawing from vast global influences.

Functioning both as a full-service brunch spot and a casual coffee spot, you can opt to luxuriate within the space's lofty ceilings and exposed brick walls or pick up a quick coffee before exploring the neighbourhood.

Amber Kitchen and Coffee operates both as a sit-down brunch spot and a cafe.

+84 Café

This cozy Brockton Village spot is a love letter to owner Amy Lam's home country of Vietnam, with homage paid in every element of the business, from the art on the walls to its menu.

Vietnamese coffee, fruity teas, creamy matcha, and even substantial dishes like coconut ice cream with sticky rice (served inside a coconut, thank you very much) and banh mi are all on the menu here, offering a one-way ticket to Vietnam without ever leaving College Street.
