Hershey's Canada says Cherry Blossom candy is going away for good

Bad news for fans of candy lovers — Hershey's Canada has confirmed that it will no longer produce its Cherry Blossom candy.

A customer service representative confirmed that Hershey's is discontinuing production. They added that some retailers have already run out of stock, while other big retailers are expected to run out by the year's second quarter.

Although they couldn't provide a reason for the decision, they do have some advice for fans of the candy: buy them now if you can and enjoy what's left.

The bell-shaped candy bar features a maraschino cherry ensconced in cherry syrup. It's coated in chocolate and includes coconut flakes, roasted peanuts, and a cherry.

Despite being considered a Canadian confectionary classic, it's actually an American creation.

According to archived records and graphic material on McMaster University's website, Cherry Blossom was created by the Walter M. Lowney Company, an American candy and chocolate manufacturer founded in Boston in 1883. A few years later, the candy found itself on shelves in Canada.

"The company operated a series of chocolate stores and also published cookbooks," reads the site.

"A Canadian branch of the company was in operation sometime in the 1890s. A factory was built in Montreal in 1905, and there were also Canadian offices in Toronto, Winnipeg, Calgary, and Vancouver. The Canadian branch is now owned by Hershey Canada Inc., a subsidiary of The Hershey Company."

Are you looking to get your hands on one? They're still available online, but they're selling out fast.

London Drugs and Quebec discount supermarket chain Super C are currently offering them at 99 cents per bar. They're also available on Exotic Access for $2.99 each. They're also available on eBay.ca at higher prices if you run out of luck at physical stores near you.
