First signs of Toronto's futuristic elevated subway line are now visible

Toronto's futuristic elevated subway line is slowly but surely beginning to take shape, with early structural work now visible along Don Mills Road as construction continues on the forthcoming Ontario Line.

New photos shared by Metrolinx last week show progress on the massive transit project around Flemingdon Park and Don Valley, where crews are busy building the foundations that will eventually support elevated tracks and two future stations.

The Ontario Line's Don Valley, Thorncliffe Park and Flemingdon Park stations will be built above street level and served by an elevated guideway.

The latest update was presented at a community meeting on Oct. 14, and offers a glimpse at how the multi-billion-dollar transit line is starting to take shape.

At Flemingdon Park Station, which will be located at Don Mills Road and Gateway Boulevard, crews have already completed the construction of columns for several elevated guideway piers, and started installing steel rebar for the concrete caps that'll sit horizontally across the columns and support the future track structure.

Construction is also progressing around the future Don Valley Station, which will create a new transit hub at Eglinton Avenue East and Don Mills Road. Crews here have completed the columns for several additional piers, and concrete has already been poured for the structures that'll eventually support the elevated guideway.

Both stations are also undergoing extensive groundwork — at Don Valley Station's north headhouse, crews have drilled 44 out of the 48 planned foundation piles as of Oct. 13, and at Flemingdon Park, 74 bored concrete piles have been drilled to support the future station building, with excavation expected to begin in early 2027.

Construction at both transit hubs is set to continue through the fall and winter, with crews working on pier caps, columns, and foundations at multiple sites along Don Mills Road.

If you're travelling in the area, you're probably already aware that Metrolinx has outlined ongoing lane reductions and sidewalk closures around Don Mills Road and Eglinton Avenue East, with some traffic changes expected to continue into late 2026 and beyond.

A full closure of Wynford Drive between Don Mills Road and Gervais Drive is also anticipated in late 2027 for elevated guideway construction.

Once open, Don Valley Station is expected to facilitate 3,600 transfers to and from Line 5 Eglinton during rush hour, and Flemingdon Park will bring more than 9,700 people within walking distance of rapid transit.
