Toronto residents weigh in once and for all on whether it's okay to eat on the TTC

In the wake of Toronto's heated municipal election, the city's residents have been getting real on plenty of hot-button issues, but there's one eternal debate that can't be answered at the polls: should people be allowed to eat on the TTC?

It's a divisive question, and one that draws as staunch of positions as that of whether Badiali is actually that much better than any other pizza joint in the city (my answer to that one? Yes, but maybe not North of Brooklyn), but it's a valid one, too.

For some, the commute is the only time of relative rest in the workday, so why shouldn't they use that time to go ham on a Jamaican patty or muffin? For others, though, the act of eating on the TTC is seen as unseemly, unnecessarily odorous, and, honestly? A little unsanitary.

blogTO decided to hit the streets to try and find a conclusion to the debate once and for all, but quickly found that our respondents were just as divided.

Answers ran the gamut from "I don't see what's wrong with it" to "it's just not cute," with detractors citing everything from the smell to the crumbs and the fact that the TTC is a "disgusting cesspool of germs" as their reasons to rail against en route eating.

Others took a more balanced approach to answer the question.

"Currently, I don't feel like it should be allowed, as it causes more waste and more uncomfortability [sic.] for those around, but if people could learn to look after and clean up after themselves, it would be wonderful for people to have a place to eat and enjoy," one man remarked.
