Iconic sign in Niagara Falls comes down marking end of era for Ontario tourist draw

It's the end of an era for a prominent sign that has graced the busy tourist strip of Niagara Falls, Ontario, since the early 1970s.

The large sign with bold red lettering on a flatiron-shaped plot of land at Fallsview Blvd. and Main St. has long directed tourists to the now-defunct Marineland amusement park.

Constructed on a stone foundation and topped by an orca whale figure, its invitation: "Let's All Go To Marineland," and a helpful pointing hand icon directing potential parkgoers "1 Mile" ahead have been a familiar sight for half a century — even predating Canada's conversion to the metric system through the 1970s.

But two years after the controversial amusement park closed for good, one of the park's last vestiges is finally disappearing from Fallsview Blvd. Video shared on social media on Tuesday shows crews in hardhats and hi-visibility vests working on ladders to remove the signage's five-decade-old red letters.

While the sign's removal may trigger nostalgic memories of better times for many Ontario residents, it also symbolizes the park's slow but inevitable end.

Canada officially put an end to whale and dolphin captivity and breeding in 2019 under Bill S-203, which banned the practices — essentially putting the park's existence on a ticking clock.

With a fractured reputation, declining attendance, and years of action from animal welfare groups, including the park being found guilty under Ontario's animal cruelty laws, Marineland finally closed permanently following its 2024 season.

Sadly, that hasn't been the end of the grim saga, and the sign's removal comes following a string of deaths of animals recently relocated from the park.

Marineland has drawn more criticism following a summer relocation effort, with four beluga whales and one dolphin transferred from the closed park dying after relocation.

A new sign will reportedly replace the removed Marineland sign.
