Two full transit lines will close in what could be nightmare travel weekend in Toronto

Transit closures this weekend in and around Toronto will make it a total nightmare to get in and out of the city for some commuters.

The weekend of Saturday, Oct. 3 and Sunday, Oct. 4 is shaping up to be a rough one for commuters relying on regional transit, with two entire transit lines to shut down, along with a significant portion of a third line.

Metrolinx has announced that the entire Barrie GO and UP Express lines will close for the upcoming weekend, as well as a large stretch of the GO Kitchener Line.

In total, roughly 148 kilometres of transit will shut down this weekend, and here's everything you need to know to plan ahead.

UP Express

Metrolinx will halt service across the entire UP Express on Saturday, Oct. 3 and Sunday, Oct. 4, due to planned construction taking place along the 23.3-kilometre route.

The airport express train will be replaced by much slower GO bus service running directly between Union Station Bus Terminal and Pearson Airport Terminal 1, skipping stops at Bloor, Mount Dennis or Weston stations.

Barrie GO

The entire 101.4 kilometre Barrie GO line will shut down this weekend to accommodate planned construction along the route. 

Metrolinx will run GO buses between Allandale Waterfront and Rutherford GO, then direct to Hwy 407 Bus Terminal, while there will be no service at Downsview Park GO.

Kitchener GO

A significant portion of the GO Kitchener Line stretching approximately 23.2 kilometres will be halted this weekend due to planned construction activity.

On Saturday, Oct. 3 and Sunday, Oct. 4, Kitchener line trains will run between Mount Pleasant and Mount Dennis GO stations, while select GO buses will run between Stratford or Kitchener GO and Hwy 407 Bus Terminal.
