It looked like the scene of a dangerous riot at Chancellors Way in Guelph over the weekend, as the Ontario university town was taken over by thousands of students as part of the University of Guelph's annual homecoming festivities.
A crowd estimated to have exceeded 5,000 students filled local streets on Saturday, and it didn't take long for things to get out of control.
Videos shared on social media reveal the complete chaos of the day, where Guelph alumni and current students had a few too many, and some even faced off with local police wielding pepper spray.
One attendee described the festivities as a "war zone."
Another clip shows DJs packing up and leaving after having a can of beer thrown at their gear.
Large gatherings of unruly students have become something of a tradition in Guelph, and while these scenes look pretty chaotic, they are pretty much in line with the madness witnessed in previous years.
One Reddit user who lives next to the homecoming party site wondered whether this year's celebrations will lead to changes to next year's plan.
The user argues that, this year, "things seemed to have gotten way out of hand," citing examples such as students scaling buildings and falling off, police in riot gear having to deploy pepper spray, and damage to local businesses.
"Stuff happens each year but its [sic] usually pretty small. This year it seems to have escalated way beyond what is acceptable," the user wrote.
