Toronto's futuristic new subway bridge just crossed a huge milestone
For an ever-increasing price tag of $34 billion, the new Ontario Line subway will at least bring some impressive new landmarks to Toronto, including a futuristic bridge currently taking shape over the Don River.
The new Lower Don Bridge is one of two crossings that will carry the 15-station Ontario Line subway over the Don River. And while it may be the smaller of the two, it is undeniably the flashier.
Spanning the river and Don Valley Parkway between Corktown and South Riverdale, the crossing separates a pair of future tunnelled sections along the Ontario Line's 15.6-kilometre route.
Boasting a sleek arch structure spanned by a lattice of cables, the stylish bridge has impressed passersby on the Don Valley Parkway since its large supports were installed in early 2026, joining a growing list of milestones for what has become arguably the most visible piece of Ontario Line infrastructure through the project's early stages.
Most recently, Metrolinx announced that the bridge crossed yet another important construction milestone with the installation of its bridge deck, which the transit agency stated is "one of the most complex and critical phases of construction."
First announced in 2021, the arch-supported structure — dubbed the Lower Don Bridge — commenced construction in 2024.
Two years into the process, the bridge is well ahead of the tunnelled sections it will link, and is expected to stand in place for several years before the first trains can traverse the crossing in the early 2030s.
Once complete, the bridge is set to be among the line's signature features, with its curved supports to be illuminated by architectural lighting for a dramatic addition to the cityscape.
