University of Toronto just climbed even higher in global school rankings

The University of Toronto just ranked among the world's best schools, improving from last year as it moved into 24th place in the 2026 Academic Ranking of World Universities.

U of T crept upward in the latest edition of ShanghaiRanking Consultancy's university rankings, released in August, which evaluates over 2,500 educational institutions worldwide.

Toronto's most prestigious school now sits tied with China's Zhejiang University, marking the ninth consecutive year the institution has placed in the top 25 on the annual Academic Ranking of World Universities.

U of T was the top Canadian school ranked in the report, and sat in 6th place on the continent behind U.S. schools Harvard University, Stanford University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), University of Cambridge and the University of California, Berkeley.

Leah Cowen, U of T's vice-president, research and innovation, and strategic initiatives, hailed the school's "excellent performance in these rankings," noting how the high placement "reflects the extraordinary creativity, ambition and dedication of our faculty, students and alumni, who are advancing knowledge and making discoveries in critical fields."

U of T wasn't the only Canadian school represented in the top 100 of this year's rankings, with the University of British Columbia sitting in 54th place and McGill University in 73rd.

U of T continues to rake in accolades in world rankings of institutions, and has recently been ranked in the QS World University Rankings, Times Higher Education World University Rankings, NTU World University Rankings and U.S. News & World Report's Best Global Universities.
