Ferry rides to the Toronto Islands will be free in August but only for select people

If you're planning a visit to the Toronto Islands, getting there may not cost you a dime next month.

In an Instagram post shared on July 30, Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow announced that ferry rides to the Toronto Islands will be free for children, youth and seniors throughout the entire month of August.

"This is one small way we can say thank you, while making it easier for more families, young people and seniors to visit the Island and experience what makes it such a precious part of our city," Chow wrote.

Deputy Mayor and Ward 10 Spadina–Fort York Councillor Ausma Malik helped bring the motion forward as residents continue to advocate for the future of the Islands.

Chow's announcement comes amid ongoing debate over Ontario Premier Doug Ford's now-rejected plan to expand Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport to allow commercial jets. Advocates have raised concerns about potential impacts on nearby public spaces, including the Toronto Islands, as well as potential noise and environmental effects.

Chow, who is running for re-election in October, has been very vocal against the expansion plan since it was first announced.

Located just a short ferry ride from downtown Toronto, the Toronto Islands are a popular waterfront destination featuring serene parks, lively beaches and the ever-so-fun Centreville Amusement Park. 

A round-trip ferry ride usually costs $4.51 for children, while youth aged 15 to 19 and seniors aged 65 and older pay $6.15. For these groups, ferry rides will be free throughout August.
