ontario trillium benefit

Some Ontario residents will be getting a big government payout this week

Keep an eye on your bank account — Ontario residents are about to get their Trillium Benefit payments (OTB) early this week.

The monthly OTB payments are scheduled to be distributed to eligible Ontarians on the 10th of each month. However, because the 10th lands on a Sunday in May, you'll be getting the money two days earlier on Friday, May 8.

If you're eligible, you might want to check your bank account for a direct deposit.

Who can get the Ontario Trillium Benefit?

The OTB is a tax-free payment that combines the Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit, the Northern Ontario Energy Credit, and the Ontario Sales Tax Credit.

You must be eligible for at least one of the payments to receive it on a monthly basis.

For the 2025 benefit year, a person could get a maximum of $1,283 for the Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit if you're between 18 and 64 years old, $1,461 if you are 65 or older, $285 if you live on a reserve or in a public long-term care home, and $25 for the time you lived in a designated college, university, or private school residence in 2024, according to the Province’s website.

The Northern Ontario Energy Credit is designed to assist low- to moderate-income residents with higher energy costs associated with living in the north. Single individuals can receive a maximum of $185, and families can receive a maximum of $285.

As for the Ontario Sales Tax Credit, you can receive up to $371 and may even receive an additional credit payment of up to $371 for your spouse or common-law partner and each dependent child under 19 years of age on the first day of the payment month. The credit won't impact your GST/HST credit payments.

OTB payment dates for the rest of the year

The benefit will be paid out on the following dates:

  • June 10, 2026
  • July 10, 2026
  • Aug. 10, 2026
  • Sept. 10, 2026
  • Oct. 9, 2026
  • Nov. 10, 2026
  • Dec. 10, 2026

If you don't receive your payment, wait 10 working days from the payment date to contact the Canada Revenue Agency.

More money coming this month

Eligible Ontario residents can also expect Canada Disability Benefit payments on May 21.

Canada Child Benefit, Ontario Child Benefit, and Child Disability Benefit payments will be made on May 20.

Payments for the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and Old Age Security (OAS) pension will be deposited on May 27.
