Pack your patience if you're planning on going out this weekend, as a slew of subway, highway, and road closures threaten to turn travel across Toronto into a total nightmare.
Whether you have plans to catch a baseball game at Rogers Centre, a soccer game at BMO Field, a concert at Scotiabank Arena, or a spring market downtown, travel times may take much longer than normal.
Major closures will shut down portions of the TTC's Line 2, the Don Valley Parkway, while several events and even a marathon will put strain on all forms of transportation.
From Friday, May 8, at 11 p.m. until Monday, May 11, at 5 a.m., the Don Valley Parkway (DVP) will be closed from Highway 401 to the Jarvis Street ramp on the Gardiner Expressway. This upcoming closure is required for general maintenance and construction work.
A hefty portion of Line 2 Bloor-Danforth will be shut down this weekend as well. Starting Friday, May 8, at 11 p.m. and lasting all of Saturday, May 9, five TTC subway stations from Woodbine to Kennedy will be out of service due to "planned track work," the transit agency says.
Scarborough commuters looking for alternative travel measures will have to rely on shuttle buses to get around until the TTC resumes subway service Sunday, May 10 at 8 a.m.
The Sporting Life 10K is also taking place this weekend and will affect traffic across a wide stretch of town, as six major roads will be closed to accommodate the marathon on Sunday, May 10.
Bayview Avenue from Front Street to Mill St. and Mill St. from Tannery Rd. to Bayview Ave. will be shut down one day earlier, beginning Saturday, May 9 at 7 a.m. until Sunday, May 10 at 5 p.m. Meanwhile, portions of Yonge St., Front. St., Cherry St. and Eastern Ave. will be closed the day of the marathon to accommodate the 24,000 participants in the annual run.
Expect heavy crowds and congestion at Union and Exhibition GO stations starting Friday, May 8, due to Blue Jays and TFC games. Commuters should plan extra travel time during busy game-time hours throughout the weekend, particularly around Rogers Centre and BMO Field.
