Toronto 10K run will shut down these major roads this weekend

Heading out this weekend for Mother's Day in Toronto might require a bit of strategic planning, as a 10K run and a coinciding expressway closure will result in significant traffic disruptions across the city. 

On Sunday, May 10, over 24,000 individuals will take to Toronto's streets to partake in the 26th edition of the Sporting Life 10K in support of the non-profit organization, Campfire Circle, which provides critical camp-based programs for children affected by cancer or serious illness. 

Since 2000, the annual run has raised over $29 million for Campfire Circle, delivering programs in pediatric hospitals across Ontario, in local communities, and at medically supported overnight camps.

The run kicks off at 7:30 a.m. at Yonge Street and Glengrove Avenue, where runners and walkers will then proceed south on Yonge Street to Front Street. The route continues east along Front Street toward the Canary District. 

Participants will then finish on Front Street by Cherry Street, and make their way to Corktown Common for the post-event party. 

The following streets will be closed to make way for the run on Sunday: 

  • Yonge Street from Lawrence Avenue to Eglinton Avenue, from 4 a.m. to 12 p.m.
  • Yonge Street from Eglinton Avenue to Front Street, from 6:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.
  • Front Street from Yonge Street to Trinity Street, from 6:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.
  • Eastern Avenue from Front Street to Trinity Street, from 6:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.
  • Front Street from Trinity Street to Bayview Avenue, from 4 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Cherry Street from Eastern Avenue to Mill Street, from 4 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Bayview Avenue from Front Street to Mill Street, from Saturday, May 9 at 7 a.m. to Sunday, May 10 at 5 p.m.
  • Mill Street from Tannery Road to Bayview Avenue, from Saturday, May 9 at 7 a.m. to Sunday, May 10 at 5 p.m.

It's also worth noting that the Don Valley Parkway (DVP) will be fully closed from Highway 401 to the Jarvis Street ramp on the Gardiner Expressway from 11 p.m. on Friday, May 8, until 5 a.m. on Monday, May 11. 

During this time, crews will be working to repair cracks and potholes, complete maintenance and replacement of guard rails, inspect bridges and remove loose concrete, repaint lane markings, inspect lighting, remove debris and graffiti, and clear catch basins to prevent flooding. 

The City notes that the upcoming DVP closure will help to advance two projects, namely the Eastern Avenue bridge project, and the Bayview-Bloor ramp.
