Amazon Canada giving shoppers gift cards after urgent air fryer recall

A nationwide air fryer recall could see some Canadians receive Amazon Canada gift cards as compensation.

Eligible Canadians will receive Amazon Canada gift cards after submitting a claim. On Friday, Health Canada issued an urgent nationwide recall of hundreds of faulty air fryers.

Certain Secura air fryers are being recalled due to a wire connection in the air fryer that can overheat, "posing fire and burn hazards." However, as of May 16, the company has not received any reports of incidents or injuries in Canada or the U.S. involving the affected product.

U.S.-based company Secura Inc. stated that the recall is "a precautionary measure."

The recall involves Secure air fryers with the model number SAF-53 (TXG-DS16) with date codes 1903 and 1904. The model number and four-digit date code are printed on the silver labels located at the bottom of each unit. The air fryers measure about 30 cm (12 inches) high, 28 cm (11 inches) deep, and 30 cm (12 inches) wide.

A total of 680 units of the affected products were sold across Canada from May 2019 to October 2020. About 6,400 were sold in the U.S. The air fryers were manufactured by Tianxi Holding Group Co., Ltd. in China and imported by Secura Inc.

If you've checked your appliance and found that it's part of the recall, immediately stop using it and contact Secura ​​Inc. through the company's recall website, by email at customercare@thesecura.com, or by phone at (888) 792-2360.

Canadians impacted by this recall can choose between a free replacement or credit in the form of an Amazon gift card code. The amount was not specified.

"To receive a credit or replacement product, consumers must provide their contact information and submit photos of the recalled unit with the power cord cut off and include information of the product's date code located at the bottom of the product," reads the statement.

Canadians should also keep an eye out for recent recalls, such as the nationwide recall of women's vitamins and a shampoo and conditioner recall in Ontario.
