ontario snow

Parts of Ontario about to be walloped with up to 20 cm of snow

Following a record-setting snowstorm at the end of January, southern Ontario is gearing up for yet another round of snowfall this week, which is expected to bring up to 20 centimetres of the white stuff to regions north of the GTA.

While the added snow will be a nuisance (especially with snowbanks from last month's storm still lingering), the system is expected to usher in more seasonal air, pushing temperatures above the freezing mark for the first time in weeks.

The brutal stretch of frigid air has lasted just over three weeks now, with Toronto recording 23 consecutive days of temperatures below 0 degrees C. The current record of 46 days was set between Dec. 26,1976 and Feb. 9, 1977.

While the system will bring warmer temperatures, the tradeoff will be heavy snowfall across the snowbelts and Golden Horseshoe on Tuesday. According to The Weather Network, the clipper system will "lift north into eastern Ontario," where residents can expect anywhere from 10 to 15 centimetres of snow by Wednesday morning.

While total snowfall accumulation in the GTA is expected to be near three to five centimetres, areas located well north of the region, such as Sudbury, are projected to see anywhere from 15 to 20 centimetres of snow.

The snow is expected to arrive in Toronto on Tuesday, just in time for the morning rush hour; however, by the afternoon, temperatures will finally climb to or above the 0 C mark. On Wednesday, Toronto is set to see a high of 1 C and a low of -8 C overnight.

Across the rest of the province, temperatures will still hover below 0 C, but will be much more tolerable than the minus-teen daytime highs we've been seeing lately. Temperatures in Toronto will remain at a more comfortable range throughout the weekend, with daytime highs of 0 C on Saturday and Sunday.

If you're wondering how the rest of the month is going to pan out weather-wise, The Old Farmer's Almanac predicts that February's monthly average temperature will be 3 C above normal, but precipitation totals are expected to be 20 mm above average at 75 mm.
