Justin Trudeau pledges to save Toronto's Santa Claus Parade

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has vowed to help out the cash-strapped Santa Claus Parade in Toronto after a fundraising campaign was started to save the 120-year-old holiday tradition.

Trudeau took to X on Friday afternoon, sharing with his 6.5 million followers that the federal government will assist the parade amid "challenges," and hailing the annual parade as "a great tradition" he wants "to keep it going for years to come."

The upcoming event, scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 24, is expected to draw more than 750,000 visitors to the downtown core. However, after 12 decades of the late fall spectacle, the future of this time-honoured tradition has been left in a fog of uncertainty. 

Parade organizers issued a statement on Nov. 7, appealing to "anyone who holds a heartfelt memory of the parade" to chip in to a gofundme campaign aimed at ensuring the event continues in 2025 and the years to follow.

"Today, growing inflationary and operational costs have put next year's parade into some jeopardy," reads the organizers' statement.

And it seems that the PM has answered this call. While the specifics of Trudeau's planned support for the event are not known at this time, his statement should offer some relief to event staff unsure about the parade's future.
