Toronto Santa Claus Parade in jeopardy as organization launches GoFundMe

It turns out that even Santa Claus is struggling with the cost of living in Toronto these days.

Now that Halloween has come and gone, the city is gearing up to launch into full-fledged holiday mode, with annual traditions like the Distillery District Winter Village and various Christmas markets set to kick off within the coming weeks.

Perhaps the most cherished and time-honoured holiday tradition of the year, the Original Santa Claus Parade, is no exception, with the annual spectacle set to attract more than 750,000 visitors to the downtown core on Sunday, Nov. 24.

The parade has run, uninterrupted, for the past 120 years, spreading holiday cheer across the city through larger-than-life floats and appearances by Canadian stars — in addition to Santa and Mrs. Claus — through world wars, recessions, the Great Depression and the Covid-19 pandemic.

Nowadays, though, the future of the parade is foggy, as organizers launch an appeal for "anyone who holds a heartfelt memory of the Parade" to make a donation to a freshly-launched GoFundMe campaign that will ensure the continuation of the tradition into 2025 and beyond.

"Today, growing inflationary and operational costs have put next year's Parade into some jeopardy," reads a statement by the parade organization released on Nov. 7. " As a result, the Parade has launched a critical GoFundMe campaign with a public appeal to save the Parade for 2025."

The GoFundMe campaign has raised over $40K as of Nov. 7.

Typically, corporate sponsors have covered the majority of the parade's annual budget, but amid financial constraints felt across all industries, budgets for those sponsors have tightened, coinciding with the cost of putting the parade on seeing an increase, leading to an unstable financial situation for the organization.

The campaign seeks to raise a total of $250,000 to ensure the smooth continuation of the parade for years to come, and, at the time of publication, has already managed to earn more than $40,000.

In addition to making a donation to the GoFundMe, parade organizers also suggest that anyone who wants to support the continuation of the Santa Claus Parade can do their part by purchasing official parade merchandise or the beloved red noses along the route and at TTC stations on parade day, or by participating in the Holly Jolly Fun Run, which also takes place on Sunday, Nov. 24.
