Ontario park just got a brand new elevated boardwalk trail

Looking for an Ontario park with a boardwalk trail winding through lush fall foliage? Your search can end at Crawford Lake Conservation Area.

Situated on rare meromictic (meaning it's made up of two different layers of water that never mix) Crawford Lake, the 232-hectare park just reopened its 1.6-kilometre-long, elevated boardwalk trail that wraps around the body of water.

The park's latest elevated trail is actually a rehabilitation project that transformed the original boardwalk, built in 1965, into an elevated wooden walkway, making historic Crawford Lake more accessible to hikers.

The project, first announced in 2021, completely closed the former boardwalk to parkgoers in September 2025, when construction to improve accessibility officially began on this reimagined lakeside path.

Indigenous Partners Council, an institution that helps non-Indigenous corporations collaborate successfully with Indigenous groups, is also working with the park to feature wood carvings and signage along the boardwalk.

This initiative is to help bring more historical awareness of the property to those who walk the loop, and honour Iroquoian history that is steeped in the park's grounds.

The year-round path is located next to the Iroquois village at Crawford Lake Conservation Area and connects to several trails in the park, including the popular Bruce Trail.
