Over 400 delays and 140 cancelled flights out of Toronto Pearson due to storm

Hundreds of flights were delayed and cancelled at Pearson Airport due to the massive summer storm that rolled through the Toronto area on Wednesday evening.

The storm, which caused widespread flooding, wind damage, and power outages throughout the region, also caused significant disruption at Canada's largest air travel hub.

According to air travel tracking platform FlightAware, Pearson Airport experienced 405 delays on Wednesday as of 9 p.m., along with 144 flight cancellations. Compared with a day without active weather, the airport saw just 37 cancellations on Tuesday.

The Greater Toronto Airport Authority (GTAA), which operates Pearson, warned of delays and cancellations hours before the storm.

The GTAA stated that "Air traffic management initiatives are currently in place due to active weather affecting Toronto Pearson and the surrounding area," and warned that "delays and cancellations affecting both arrivals and departures are possible."

Multiple airlines have also issued notices to passengers due to the continued gridlock on Pearson's tarmac.

The storm has also resulted in the shutdown of roads, highways, and events across the city, including an early CNE closure, while tens of thousands remain without power.
