princess cruises hiking fees

Canadians will now have to pay more to vacation on popular cruise line

It's not just air travel that's getting more expensive — travellers from Canada who love cruise vacations now face higher fees.

Passengers from Canada sailing with Princess Cruises now have to pay more in tips and service charges, as the Carnival Corporation-owned company recently changed its policy. In an email to us, a representative confirmed the increase started in March.

"Rolling out starting March 8, we will implement a US$1 (C$1.37) per guest, per day increase to the Crew Appreciation amount for guests who do not hold a Princess Premier, Princess Plus," they stated.

Guests in suites now pay a daily gratuity of US$20 (C$27.36), while mini suites, cabanas, and Reserve Collection rooms carry a US$19 (C$25.99) daily charge. All other staterooms come with a US$18 (C$24.62) gratuity per person per day.

That increase can certainly add up. For a family of four opting for a state room, gratuity for a seven-day cruise will now cost a total of US$504 (C$689).

Long-time cruisers onboard will also notice a slight rise in service charges.

"In addition, Food and Beverage service charges will be adjusted from 18 per cent to 20 per cent for those who do not hold a Princess Premier, Princess Plus, or other beverage packages," reads the statement.

Service charges cannot be refunded and are automatically added to optional items such as drinks, dining room meals, specialty dining, private group events, and other products. Guests have the option to pre-pay for the gratuity and service charge.

The Princess Cruises representative said that the increase was due to rising operational costs.

"We distribute 100 per cent of collected gratuities directly back to our crew in support of their dedication and hard work," they stated. "We remain committed to delivering outstanding value and memorable vacations for our guests."

There are further increases ahead.

Starting April 1, Carnival Cruise Line is set to increase onboard tips as well as the price of its non-alcoholic beverage package.
