Air India grounds number of flights to Toronto amid high fuel prices

If you plan on flying with Air India to and from Canada, you should be aware of the airline's new reduced flight schedule.

Air India confirmed with us that it is reducing frequency on two major routes to Canada through May 2026.

The airline's flights between Delhi and Toronto will be cut from 10 to seven weekly flights. Flights between Delhi and Vancouver will be slashed from seven to five weekly flights.

The flight reductions are due to the extraordinarily high fuel prices that continue to persist amid the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran.

These flight reductions could make travel to India more difficult for the 1.35 million residents of Indian descent who live in Canada.

On top of slashing flights, Air India also increased its fuel surcharge on April 10, charging passengers flying round-trip from North America US$280 (C$383).

Air India isn't the only airline slashing routes in Canada.

Last month, Air Canada suspended seven routes — two domestic, three between Canada and the U.S., and two international.

"As we regularly do, we monitor and review our network to ensure that routes are meeting profitability targets. Jet fuel prices have doubled since the start of the Iran conflict, affecting some lower profitability routes and flights which now are no longer economically feasible," reads an Air Canada notice. "Schedule adjustments, including some frequency reductions, are being made in response."

Last week, the carrier confirmed with us that it is cutting four more flights to the U.S.

"This decision was made as a result of the current price of jet fuel. Affected customers will be contacted with alternate travel options, including the option of a full refund where applicable," stated the spokesperson.

Soaring fuel prices amid the U.S.-Iran war have continued to make it more expensive for Canadians to travel. Both WestJet and Air Canada announced a reduction of capacity in order to manage fuel costs. The carriers also added temporary fuel surcharges on certain flights in April.
